What Is IRP?

One agreement, all jurisdictions

The International Registration Plan is a cooperative agreement among U.S. states, Canadian provinces, and the District of Columbia that allows motor carriers to register commercial vehicles for travel in multiple jurisdictions using a single account. IRP ensures:

Registration fees are proportionally distributed based on the miles driven in each jurisdiction

Full compliance with all state and provincial regulations through a single registration

Carriers receive apportioned license plates recognized across all participating jurisdictions

Who Needs IRP?

You need IRP registration if your vehicle

Operates in two or more jurisdictions (states, provinces, or D.C.)

Has a gross vehicle weight (GVW) over 26,000 lbs

Has three or more axles, regardless of weight

Operating without IRP when required can result in fines, penalties, and vehicles being placed out of service at weigh stations.

Important Notes

DMV Registration Fees Are Separate

Our $200.00 service fee covers the preparation and filing of your IRP application. The actual registration fees assessed by the DMV — which vary based on your fleet size, vehicle weight, and the jurisdictions you operate in — will be communicated to you separately and paid directly to the DMV.

Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) — Required for Vehicles Over 55,000 lbs

If your vehicle has a gross vehicle weight of 55,001 lbs or more, you must pay the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) and provide proof of payment (IRS Form 2290 — Schedule 1) before your IRP registration can be processed. Without a valid, stamped Schedule 1, the DMV will not issue apportioned plates for your vehicle. Make sure this is completed in advance to avoid delays.
